A a2a visa change is an exit and re entry. UAE immigration issues the new tourist visa against your Japan passport while you are physically outside the country, so leaving is not optional. A short flight is the quickest way to meet that condition. From Dubai you would normally fly to Muscat, Kuwait City or Doha and return to Terminal 2 within six to twelve hours.

There is also a bus option to Oman, but it takes a full day or more and includes an overnight stay. The flight route is pricier than the bus, but it saves an entire day and works better for families, seniors and people who cannot take time off.

When Japan passport holders need a a2a visa change

Most 30 day and 60 day UAE visit visas can now be extended from inside the country, so a a2a visa change is not always necessary. Here is when it becomes the right choice for a Japan passport holder:

• You have used every in country extension available. A 30 day visa can be extended three times and a 60 day visa twice, each by 30 days, up to a total stay of 120 days.
• Your residency was cancelled and you need more time in the UAE. The only route is a new tourist visa, which a a2a visa change provides.
• Your visa expired before you applied for an extension. In that case you pay the overstay fine and exit on a a2a visa change.

UAE authorities charge AED 50 for every day a visit visa remains expired, and the same flat rate applies across all visa types and emirates. Visitors do not receive any grace days, and the fine runs from the first day of overstay. The day before you fly

Once your documents are approved we book the flydubai seat, send you the ticket and ask you to clear any fines in the GDRFA or ICP app. With a valid visa, no payment is due at the airport. Book for Monday to Thursday if you can, as a Friday delay can stretch over the weekend.

Check in and exit at Dubai Terminal 2

Reach Terminal 2 at Dubai International about five hours early, check in with flydubai and ask for the outbound and return boarding passes together. Photograph both passes and send them to us on WhatsApp. After the exit is registered, we submit the new tourist visa application for your Japan passport without delay.

At the transit airport

Flight time is roughly an hour. Because you do not leave the airport, Japan passport holders need no visa for the transit country. Approval usually arrives within hours, and you receive the visa PDF on WhatsApp. Should a security check be triggered, expect 24 to 48 hours. Arrival at Terminal 2

Before flying, check whether you qualify for the AED 1,200 in country extension, which adds 30 days without leaving.
