How a a2a visa change works

At its core, a a2a visa change is a short trip out of the country so that a new visa can be issued. UAE immigration issues the new tourist visa against your Romania passport while you are physically outside the country, so leaving is not optional. Flying is the fastest way to satisfy that rule. The typical route runs from Dubai International Terminal 2 to Muscat, Kuwait or Doha, with a return the same day.

Some visitors choose the Oman bus route instead, though it is slower and involves sleeping near the border crossing. Flying is the more expensive choice, but it is faster and far more comfortable for Romania families, older passengers and busy professionals.

Is a a2a visa change the right option for you?

Many UAE visit visas can be extended without leaving, which means a a2a visa change is only needed in specific cases. For Romania citizens, the following circumstances call for a a2a visa change:

• You have used every in country extension available. A 30 day visa can be extended three times and a 60 day visa twice, each by 30 days, up to a total stay of 120 days.
• Your UAE residence visa has been cancelled. A cancelled residency cannot be extended, so we convert your status to a 60 day tourist visa through a a2a visa change.
• The expiry date has passed. Extension is no longer possible, so a a2a visa change after paying any fine is the way forward.
• Your visa category is not eligible for extension. We check this for Romania citizens on WhatsApp before you spend anything.

Do not wait until the last day

Every day past expiry costs AED 50 in fines, whichever emirate issued the visa and whichever visa type you hold. Visitors do not receive any grace days, and the fine runs from the first day of overstay. After 30 days of overstay, an exit permit of roughly AED 250 to 300 becomes necessary as well. Booking early costs nothing extra, so we advise Romania travellers to message us with 10 to 15 days left on the current visa.

We only sell the 60 day a2a visa change, since a 30 day visa would cost nearly as much for half the validity. An AED 100 supplement applies to certain passports that need extra processing time. Ask us whether Romania is on that list before you book. If you have overstayed, the fine is paid directly to immigration and is not included in the AED 1,550.

Documents required for a Romania passport

Send these on WhatsApp and we can usually confirm eligibility within the hour:

1. Passport scan showing the front page and the back cover. A missing back cover is the most common reason an application is returned, so please include both.
2. Passport validity of at least six months from the planned travel date, with at least two blank pages and no damage.
3. A colour passport size photo on a white background, taken within the last six months, without glasses.
4. A copy of the visa you are on now, or the official cancellation paper if your residency was cancelled.

Depending on nationality, a six month bank statement may be requested. If that applies to Romania applicants, a UAE resident family member can provide theirs instead. Bear in mind that immigration officers sometimes ask arriving passengers to show they can fund their stay, so keep a card or cash accessible. What happens on the day

Preparation

We confirm your flydubai flight, share the ticket and remind you to settle any overstay fine through the GDRFA or ICP app. With a valid visa, no payment is due at the airport. Avoid Fridays. If a security check is triggered on a Friday, approval may slip past the weekend when offices are closed.

At the airport

Reach Terminal 2 at Dubai International about five hours early, check in with flydubai and ask for the outbound and return boarding passes together. WhatsApp us photos of both boarding passes before you go through immigration. Your exit stamp ends the current visa, and we lodge the fresh visa the instant the exit appears in the system.

In Muscat, Kuwait or Doha

The flight takes around one hour. You remain in the transit area and do not need to clear immigration in Oman, Kuwait or Qatar for a same day return. Approval usually arrives within hours, and you receive the visa PDF on WhatsApp. If your application is referred for a security check, approval can take 24 to 48 hours. Both flydubai and Air Arabia allow passengers to wait at the airport until the visa is approved, and we stay in contact throughout.

Returning to Dubai

With the visa PDF on your phone, the eGate at Terminal 2 gives you a fast entry. If approval has not come through yet, skip the eGate, approach a manual counter and stay in the waiting area until we send the PDF. The visa clock starts on the date of re entry.

A2A versus extension versus bus

Before flying, check whether you qualify for the AED 1,200 in country extension, which adds 30 days without leaving. When you can no longer extend, a a2a visa change provides twice the stay of an extension for AED 1,550. The bus to Oman costs less, from AED 1,000 for residence cancellation and AED 1,400 to 1,500 for visit visa holders, but it takes a day or two and includes a night away. For the majority of travellers from Romania, the a2a visa change is the more comfortable and predictable route.

• Leaving it to the last minute. Seats disappear around Eid, December and January, so contact us a week or more in advance.
